The Difference Between A Karatbar And A Gold Coin

The Difference Between A Karatbar And A Gold Coin

By Tim Wycislak

"What IS the difference between

A karatbar and a gold coin?"

Interesting question.

A Karatbar is 1 gram of .999 pure 24 karat gold

Enclosed in a credit card sized piece of plastic.

(see http://sevenfiguresystems.blogspot.com/2015/03/what-is-karatbar.html What Is A Karatbar )

The gold, itself, is not mixed with any other metal.

A gold coin is a specified amount (1 ounce or less or more) of

Gold mixed with other metals for hardness.

So, for example, a 1 ounce U.S. Gold Eagle coin

Weighs 1.091 troy oz., and, because of the other metal(s), and

Assays out at a fineness of .916 or 22 karats of gold.

(see  www.ntrmetals.com/bullion-encyclopedia.php )

So where 31.1 Karatbars total one troy ounce of 24 karat gold,

(there are 31.1 grams in 1 troy ounce of gold)

A U.S. Gold Eagle coin contains one troy ounce of 22 karat gold.

Big difference.

Less gold equals less value.

More gold equals more value.

Which would you rather have?
